Scale business in the next 90 days this year

This is the way you fill your “bucket of time”. Don’t do this year!

Let me explain. Of course, many entrepreneurs know this idea. How do you plan your 2017?

What you (and I) need to do better, is decide what are the most important things we have to accomplish in our businesses in the next 90 days, and then focus on getting them done.

These are what you call your ‘Rocks.’

First, put big ‘rocks’ in the bucket.

Imagine, The big glass container represents your time.

Lets call it the next 90 days.

Next to it, you have some big rocks, pebbles, sand, and water.

If you put in the water and sand first, they’ll fall right to the bottom.  Then if you add in the pebbles, they’ll sit immersed in the water, on top of the sand.

Then if you try to put in the big rocks, they’ll sit on top of everything else, and they won’t all fit.

But…

If you do it another way, it’s possible to get everything to fit in the jar just nicely.

First put in the big rocks.

Then the pebbles are poured in, and they all fall between the gaps in the rocks to the bottom.  Then the sand is poured, and finally the water.

Everything fits.

Here’s the lesson;  those rocks represent the big, important things you have to do each day.

It could be sending an email to your list.  Hosting a sales webinar.  Setting up a joint venture deal.

Planning the outline of a new product. Making 10 sales calls.

Basically the important things that move your business forwards.

The pebbles, sand, and water represent the lesser important ‘busy’ work.

A pebble might be taking a phone call with a colleague in your industry, and chatting about how things are going in your businesses.

You might get some value out of this call.  But more likely, you’ll burn up 30 minutes of time and it won’t impact your business.

The sand could be you responding to a few urgent but unimportant emails.

The water is you checking Facebook, Skype, Snapchat, Twitter… or getting sucked into watching time wasting videos on Youtube.

The water activities are incredibly tempting.  They don’t require much deep thought, and are entertaining.

But they do nothing to move your business forwards.

My big goal in 2017 is to focus more on the rocks and leave the pebbles, sand and water to the end of the day IF I have time.

By the way – I didn’t come up with this analogy.

I read about it in this book by Verne Harnish, which you should buy.

It’s called ‘Scaling Up.’ (thanks to my mentor, Matt Lloyd for this reminder)

If you’ve got a business that’s doing multiple 6 figures annually and you want to scale to multiple 7 figures, you’ll get a lot out of it.

And if you have a new business and / or you’re not yet making a lot of sales, you’ll still get some useful insights out of it.

So while I’m in my location today in Toronto I’ll be clearly identifying my rocks for the first quarter of 2017.

Any opportunities / distractions that come up during those 90 days, will have to go on the waiting list for the next 90 days.  Completing the current Rocks will be the number one priority.

My advice to you is to start operating your business this way.

Decide on what the most important things are to accomplish in the next 90 days, and block out everything else.  What few important projects will result in the greatest amount of sales?

If you focus on these things, you’ll be able to complete 2017 having accomplished a few super important projects that catapulted your business forwards, rather than half-completed 100 different things that were not really that important in the first place.

By adding your website’s sitemap in the Webmaster Tools area, you’ll make it easier for Google to find your content and rank it for your keywords.

SECRET #3 – Verify Your Domain

Do you want to know a simple mistake that’s made on an almost routine basis?

It’s verifying your domain.  

I’m not sure why, but most folks just don’t pay much attention to this…

… even though it’s EXACTLY what you need to do, if you want to rank your website on Google.

The good thing is, even if you’re a total newbie, verifying your domain is pretty simple.

You see, when you’re in the Google Webmaster Tools section, you’ll see an area where you can “verify” your domain.

This commonly looked over task is SUPER important, so you want to make sure you do it.

Essentially, you’re telling Google that you’re a reputable site and that they should rank you in their search engine.

Again, if you want to rank your website on Google, it’s important that you complete this step… you definitely don’t want to skip over it.

SECRET #4 – 404 Errors (IMPORTANT)

This is one of the most common error’s you’ll find online.

You see, when you get a 404 error in your Google Webmaster Tools, it means when there was a search for your page… nothing came up.

There’s a lot of reasons for something like this.

It could be because you switched from one web platform to another or maybe one of your URLs was accidentally changed.

The real issue is, people are finding your site in the search engines, clicking on it and nothing is showing up!  

This hurts your credibility and also damages rankings within Google.

Either way, you’ll want to fix these errors as quickly as possible.  

Once you do, you’ll start to notice a resurgence in the traffic to your website or blog.

SECRET #5 – Index Submission

What’s interesting is, most bloggers and website owners don’t ever get indexed on Google.

If you aren’t indexed, you won’t get ranked… and if you don’t rank, you won’t claim all the FREE traffic already searching for you!

But here’s the deal… 

… just because you have the money to afford these business expenses does not inherently mean that you will successfully build an online business. 

Certainly you’re putting yourself in a better position to succeed when you can invest in your business and invest in yourself.

But it still requires work and consistency. 

From time to time we’ll see people who have invested in their business, take little to no action, and then wonder why they weren’t able to generate any sales or profit.

It seemed as though they felt entitled to success just because they had forked over the initial investment.

It’s the equivalent of not doing any exercise for 10 years and then one day spending thousands of dollars on a brand new, state of the art, home gym.

On day 1 you go into your new home gym, do 10 push ups, and then run to the mirror to check out your new bulging muscles.

The greatest thing about the Home Based Business industry is that anyone can get involved.

The worst thing about the Home Based Business industry is that anyone can get involved!

Look… the Home Based Business industry has a big problem that you’ll never hear the ‘gurus’ talk about (at least they won’t talk about it openly)…

So here it is…

… the majority of people who get started in the home based business industry will quit. 

Sadly, this is true.

Up lines, “sponsors”, and referring affiliates will all tell  you how easy it is to make money online.

But the truth is…

It’s more competitive today than it’s ever been before to make money online.

Anyone who tells you differently, is lying to you.

Here’s what I mean specifically, 

There will be times when you’ll need to be extremely resourceful in order to accomplish a task or achieve a goal. 

Unfortunately, a large percentage of people simply don’t have the resourcefulness to figure things out and move forward with their business. 

As a result, when faced with a new tech hurdle or challenge… most people will get so “stuck” that in their own minds they believe they can’t accomplish what they originally set out to do.  

Furthermore, there will be rejection and obstacles that you’ll have to overcome.

Therefore, the simplest and most effective way to deal with the rejection is to develop a leather skin.

Or as we used to say in my old Telecom sales days…(says Bill Pescosolido)

… “You need to get ‘duck feathers’”. 

As you probably know… water rolls off a duck’s feathers to keep it warm and dry.

I’ll take it one step further. 

Think about the difference between the commercials on tv during your typical NFL football game vs. during the Wimbledon Tennis tournament or the Masters golf tournament. 

If you pay attention you will see a huge difference in advertisements between NFL football vs. Tennis /golf and they all still fall under the umbrella of “sporting event”. 

“If you’re trying to market to everyone, you’ll end up marketing to no one.”

So with this in mind… Who are YOU advertising to?

Is your target audience too broad?

Could you narrow down your target market by getting more specific based on the solution your offer provides?

Probably so.

Furthermore, have you created your Customer Avatar yet?

You’re Customer Avatar allows you to communicate to many people while “speaking” to only one. 

In fact, having a clearly defined Customer Avatar is critical to the success of your business.

Myth #5: I’m Going To Build My Business Online Using Free Strategies 

You may be thinking that you’re going to build your online business using ‘FREE’ methods to get traffic.

That way you have no money going out the door.

But again… this is a typical mistake a lot of newbies make.

Ask yourself this…

How much is your time worth?

For example, let’s say you’re making $1 Million/year.

Your time can be valued in the following way:

$1 Million a year ($84,000/month) = $350 / hour

But even if you’re not making $1 Million per year and say that you value your time at $50/hour. 

Now take for example you want to do SEO… so, you’re going to spend 2 hours a day writing articles for the next 3 months, trying to get ranked in the search engines- in total, 180 hours of your life.

So… those few hours a day you end up spending writing articles for ‘free’ are NOT really free- they actually cost you thousands, and thousands of dollars. 

Even valuing your time at $50/hour that would still amount to $9,000.

And then if you target the wrong keywords, and you make very little or even zero dollars from all of that time….

You’ve wasted the equivalent of $9,000! 

There is NO SUCH THING as free traffic.

All traffic has a cost!
